Oh, Let’s Just Call It Man Food

Man food is meat and potatoes in some type of meat-flavored sauce.  Sure you can consider adding other vegetables to it, but they have to be hearty, masculine vegetables.

Carrots are hard, strong, and grow in the dirt – masculine.

Green beans have to be broken (snapped) into submission – masculine.

Broccoli has cute yellow flowers so it’s out.  Cabbage is limp and cooks in about 30 seconds so it’s out too.

Now I’m a female that tries her best to keep things on the lighter side for the overall health of the family, but sometimes I have to set aside my femi-nine ways and make pure man food – testosterone on a plate so to speak.

man foodThis looks manly, but it gets even manlier….

Man Food

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 4 med red potatoes, chopped into uniformly small cubes
  • 1 c. chopped baby carrots
  • 2 cans green beans, drained
  • 2 cans reduced fat cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 packet Lipton Onion Soup mix
  • 1 beef bouillon cube
  • ½ c. water

Brown ground beef in frying pan and drain.  Layer potatoes, carrots, meat, and green beans in a slow cooker.  Combine all other ingredients in a mixing bowl then pour over everything.  Cook on high for about 4 hours or until potatoes are softened, stirring once halfway through cooking time.  Serve with shredded cheddar cheese on top if desired.

Kim’s notes:  The next time I make this I’m going to add even more carrots.  Cooking time can be tricky for the vegetables, I cooked mine on low for 5 hours, realized the potatoes were still hard, then put it on high for another 2 hours.  They turned out perfectly softened, but since everyone’s slow cooker is different, I suggest going with high first, then just letting it warm until it’s time to serve.

Happy Cooking!
