My Grandma and the Rock Star
This tale comes from my Dad – he’s not a Mama, but since he isn’t me I thought I could stash it down here as I find this story quite noteworthy.
My Grandma is awesome. A lady that radiates love and is even more welcoming than a warm afghan and a candy dish (though her house was well known for both). You may remember her from this gem last year:
This past year my grandma decided that she’d had enough of housework, yard work, and many other mundane day-to-day tasks (I can relate), so she packed up and moved to an assisted living center in the same middle-of -nowhere town that my parents moved to a year ago. She gets treated like the Queen that she is and doesn’t have a care in the world (besides having fun and doing her hair up cute).
You know the problem with middle of nowhere towns? They are a pain in the tooshey to get to. Going to visit isn’t easy or cheap and therefore doesn’t happen all that often.
Not even at Christmas time.
Now in this middle-of-nowhere town there is a growing college. Because of the college there are many do gooders in town – young people who want to do a little something to make the world a better place, and therefore the Assisted Living Center gets many, many visitors (especially during the holidays).
Many of the kids come to sing, play the piano, share stories and talents, or just visit. Some are immensely talented, others are goofy, and then, one day, one kid was a Rock Star:
That’s my Grandma, and that’s David Archuleta. Maybe you’ve heard of him? He was a runner up on a little show called American Idol. He was in town for a concert at the college and wanted to do something nice in the community. He came to my grandma’s home with just his pianist and sang requests from his audience.
There was no press, no manager, no agent. Just a good kid wanting to do something good in his free time.
I’m sure there are lots of people out there who, like me, wish with all their hearts to visit their loved ones – sing carols and share an evening, but who can’t. I want to personally thank each and every person who went out of their way to help someone they didn’t know during this past holiday season. Your small act stood in the place of many prayers and hopes of families far away.

That’s David Archuleta for you. Thinking of everyone else first…what a sweet story. Gotta love David!

Wow. That would be so fun to hear him sing like that. He went Christmas caroling with his brother and sisters. Wouldn’t that be something to open your door and have the Archuletas sing to you. What a super voice he has. It was made for Christmas carols.

Thanks so much for sharing your story. My grandfather is 12 hrs from me in an assisted living facility and I miss him terribly. I love the thought of younger folks, rock star or not, taking some time to go visit with these sweet, intelligent, vibrant older people.
David Archuleta is nothing short of amazing. He wanted to give something back and chose a quiet, honorable way to do it. Thanks for sharing!!

Thank you for sharing your story of your Grandma meeting David.
David has become a huge inspiration to all of us with his voice and his selfishless acts of good deed for everyone.
He has inspired many to start giving back however they can and for that I am very grateful to a person who takes nothing for granted…not even his amazing voice.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. What I love most about this is that he was doing this even before he became a “rock star”. David Archuleta is an exceptional young man and a light in so many people’s lives. I’m so happy that your grandmother got to spend that time with him.

Thank you for sharing your amazing story. So awesome that your grandma had the chance to meet David Archuleta. He’s heart is just so full of love and care so deeply in giving every chance he gets to make someone happy. This reminds me what was mention in the church yesterday. ” Expect all good things from God” ” Attempt to do good things for God ” With David, God is blessing him with all good things in life and David is doing good things for God.

I am so blessed to have my mom..who is 87…still with us! She came to share Christmas with us this year too!!
She lives all alone in her home in Utah, but is starved for some love and attention from others. Everytime someone shows her a kindness…with a touch, a hug, a kind word or thought, she talks about it for days. We forget how much the older people in our society are neglected. I am so thankful that the “goodness” and loving heart of David helps us all to remember those people…even those who are not family members. He is such an inspiration to everyone! This was a beautiful story…the tears are here.

You know what? David is wonderful. I’ve been a fan for as long as I’ve known about him. But I’ll bet he felt quite honored to meet the wonderful men and women at your grandmother’s ALF, too. My mother was in an assisted living facility for quite a while, and I know how much music brightened her days. Thanks for sharing your story.

Thank you for sharing this story about your Grandma and David Archuleta! This is one of the reasons David holds a special place in my heart. His voice is, of course, beyond amazing. But his spirit, believe it or not, is even more amazing and continues to teach those around him how to love more, do more. He is an inspiration and is using his platform responsibly and for that, I’ll adore him forever. Thanks again!

Your story brought a tear to my eye. Not just for the love that David showed, and the fact that he gave of his time and talent; but, for your words of admiration that other young people at the nearby college also visit and give of their time. Surely if you look for the good in people you shall find it! Thank you for sharing your story and pic!

Thank you for sharing this story. Your grandma looks so happy. David has many adult fans who admire him as an artist and a person with a pure heart. My family went to one of his Christmas concerts and I was surprised to see so many families coming to listen to him. One of songs, Fields of Gold, shows why he draws all ages of fans including adult fans. Just gorgeous.

Thanks for sharing your story! When I heard David on AI I thought what a voice. After the show and during his AI tour I read stories and testimonies as to the genuine goodness of this young man. Since then I have become an avid fan and traveled many miles to see his concerts. I do this not only because he has the voice of an angel but because he is the kind of person that does things like visit your Grandma for no other reason than to bring a smile and some joy to others. Am I surprised by his act of kindness? Absolutely not! Glad your Grandma got to enjoy the glow of David!

He is a real role model for us all who can quietly sight unseen make a difference in the lives of those around us. He is inspiring a whole generation of youth to do for others and reminding us older ones to not stop but keep on keeping on.
